Keep small livestock as a protein backup when crops fail

A ruined harvest hits plant crops all at once, but it doesn't automatically take out animals raised alongside them. Small livestock — a few hens for eggs, rabbits, or even bees — are a genuinely different failure mode from field crops, need much less space and feed than larger animals, and can keep producing something edible through a season your garden or fields didn't. It's not a full substitute for growing food, just a second, mostly-independent source that doesn't fail for the same reasons.
