Use a VPN on public or untrusted Wi-Fi

An open café, hotel, or airport network makes it easy for anyone else on it to intercept unencrypted traffic, and a fake "free Wi-Fi" hotspot set up specifically to snoop on other users is a well-known trick. A VPN encrypts your connection before it leaves your device, so it's worth turning on by default on any network you don't control — not just when you remember to think about it.
