Keep a working spare device, not just a backup of your data

A good backup protects your data, but it doesn't protect your ability to actually work, log in, or reach people the day your only device fails — a dead laptop the morning of something important is still a real problem even if nothing was lost. Keep an old phone or laptop functional as a genuine spare rather than letting it sit dead in a drawer: charge it occasionally, keep its OS reasonably updated, and know your restore process well enough that getting back to work on it doesn't take longer than the emergency itself.
