Insulating the water lines built into your house protects the pipes you can't see — but garden hoses, drip irrigation tubing, and outdoor sprinkler lines are just as vulnerable and much easier to forget, because they're not "the plumbing," they're just equipment lying in the yard. Water trapped inside them freezes, expands, and splits the hose or tubing from the inside, which you won't notice until you try to use it again next spring. Drain them, disconnect them from the spigot, and store them somewhere above freezing before the first hard frost — it's a ten-minute job that saves buying new equipment.
