Keep some supplies stored outside the house, not just inside it

A severe enough earthquake can make your own house unsafe or impossible to re-enter, which is a problem if every bit of your emergency kit is stored inside it. Keep a smaller duplicate stash — water, a first aid kit, sturdy shoes, a basic tool — somewhere outside the structure: a garden shed, a car trunk, or a buried or bolted-down container in the yard. It doesn't replace your main kit, it just means one collapsed building doesn't take everything with it.
