When a storm overwhelms the municipal sewer system, it can push wastewater back up through your own drains and toilets — a separate problem from the floodwater itself, and a much dirtier one. A backflow (or check) valve installed on your main sewer line stops that flow from reversing, and it's a one-time fix rather than something you can do in the moment once water's already rising.
