Keep a winter car emergency kit separate from your home kit

Getting stranded on a snow-covered road is a different problem than losing power at home, and your house kit won't be with you when it happens. Keep blankets, a phone charger that doesn't need an outlet, snacks, sand or kitty litter for traction, and a small shovel in the car itself all winter, so you're not improvising with an empty tank and a dead phone if you get stuck.
