A pipe that freezes solid can crack from the inside before you ever see a leak, and the damage often isn't obvious until it thaws and floods the house. Let faucets on exterior walls drip slightly during extreme cold, open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air reach the pipes, and know that a small amount of wasted water is far cheaper than a burst pipe.
