Nextcloud is an open-source alternative to services like Google Drive or Dropbox: file sync and sharing, calendars, contacts, and collaborative editing, all running on a server you control instead of a third party’s.
A bit of real history worth knowing: Nextcloud is a 2016 fork of ownCloud (a related but separate project — the same one this site’s Secure PCs for Remote Access offering also references). The two share ancestry but have diverged since, so they’re not interchangeable.
The practical appeal for a security/privacy-conscious setup is straightforward: your files live on hardware you control, not on a provider’s servers under their terms of service. Worth knowing: this site’s own hosting infrastructure runs Nextcloud as a real, working service — not just something recommended in the abstract.
